A recent trend in European vehicle engines has seen the integration of the air intake components within the engine cover.
Known as a Unitised Airbox Design (UAD), the system enables the engine to be used efficiently across multiple vehicle platforms while reducing manufacturing costs. Further, by combining the air intake components and mass airflow device around the engine module, manufacturers can reduce intake ducting and eliminate external airbox assemblies, saving valuable space under the bonnet.
While the modular design serves to integrate air intake components within a singular unit, it also limits the amount of space available for the air filter element. In turn, UAD filter elements must deliver even higher filtration performance, especially with respect to particle retention efficiency.
The air filter elements are of a plastic moulded design and are made to meet the performance demands of UAD-equipped engines while also supporting the ever-increasing service intervals and reduced cost of ownership requirements manufacturers strive to deliver.
The Ryco A2023 replacement air filter element suits a range of V6 engines as used in the Volkswagen Audi Group, including Audi Q7 (4M) and Volkswagen Touareg (CR) models fitted with 3.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI units. The air filter element supports clean, measured air flow through the UAD’s primary intake pipe and mass air flow meter while a smaller feed supports the secondary air injection system crucial to the engine’s emission controls systems.
In UAD systems such as those fitted to the Volkswagen Audi Group models listed, the air filter element is protected by a vacuum-operated bypass flap. Controlled by the vehicle ECM it guards against potential water ingestion, ensures sufficient airflow at higher crankshaft speeds and reduces induction noise.
